About Baby Yoga

One of the challenges of being a new parent is that, in the beginning, there can be a lot of things you don’t understand about communicating with your baby because you are still getting to know each other!

By doing baby yoga, you will learn some really useful techniques to help you ‘have a conversation’ with your baby right from the start, and gain a deeper understanding of how to communicate with each other.

What’s more, baby yoga is a wonderful way for mums to ease back into exercise, gain a deeper understanding of their babies’ development, and spend valuable time engaging and bonding with them.

Designed with the Early Years Foundation Stage in mind, our baby yoga courses use interactive stories, songs and dance to encourage physical and cognitive development, and explore a different theme each week – dinosaurs, the jungle, farmyard animals, weather, space, and seasons, to name just a few!

Baby yoga is a natural successor to baby massage, though it is not essential for your baby to have attended massage before starting yoga.

What are the benefits of baby yoga?

  • As well as the benefits of positive touch (also found in baby massage), movement provides stimulation of your baby’s main physical systems; it can also help teach your baby to gain control over their bodies and their movements.
  • Baby yoga can improve your baby’s sleeping patterns and digestion
  • Strengthens and improves muscle tone; maintains flexibility in the spine and joints
  • Stimulates the production of oxytocin (the hormone responsible for love and bonding, and associated with the ability to maintain healthy interpersonal relationships and healthy psychological boundaries with other people)
  • Your baby will become more aware of their body and their actions, which can encourage them to move and get mobile
  • Mums regain posture and strength, and work the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles
  • Parents can also benefit from the social time at the end of the class where your baby is free to play with toys while you catch up with other parents over refreshments

What to expect from a Little Legs Baby Yoga course:

image123

  • Perfect for complete beginners, our baby yoga courses are soothing and rejuvenating for both baby and parent
  • Each week includes new breathing and stretching exercises for parents, along with gentle movements and yoga postures for each area of baby’s body
  • As with all of our classes, they are baby-led, meaning that the needs of your baby always come first, so that they have the opportunity to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to baby yoga and you can respect their non-verbal cues
  • Classes usually open with a warm-up segment that can also double up as a welcome time where you and your baby will follow through with some familiar songs and simple, limbering moves
  • Expect to be fully involved (dress appropriately), as the majority of the yoga moves will require you to help your baby to perform postures, stretches, swings and holds which help build strength and co-ordination for physical developments
  • A lot of the yoga will be given with certain physical benefits in mind and the various benefits of the moves will be explained as you progress through the classes
  • Some of the baby yoga moves will be variations on grown-up yoga postures, with an emphasis on correct breathing which you will carry out while working with your baby
